Holy Trinity

Introduction:

We all know that there is only one God who created all. Our Holy bible says clearly that there is only one God who created all. Nobody helped him in the creation; but he alone created. Before him nobody was there. He is the first and foremost for creation. He is the God Almighty who revealed Himself, “Holy Trinity.” But the word, “Trinity” in the concept of God confuses many. The word “Trinity” reveals a very great mystery that the one God is being in three persons, but the three persons are single entity. They say how can be one God become three persons. An ordinary man gets confused in the mystery of “Trinity.” A separate religious wing named “Jehovah Witness” gets perplexed and makes others to be perplexed. Let us clarify ourselves in this concept.

The Sole Creator:

The God Almighty created the heavens and earth. Let us read Isaiah 42:5 that says, “Thus says God, the Lord who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it…” Here we come to know that the Lord created the heavens and spread out the earth and what comes from it and he is the person who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it. Nobody but the God alone made all things. Isaiah 44:24 says, “Thus says the Lord your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb, I am the Lord who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens who by myself spread out the earth.” In Good News Bible Isaiah 44:24 says, “I am the Lord your saviour; I am the one who created you. I am the Lord, the creator all things. I alone stretched out the heavens; when I made the earth, no one helped me.” Isaiah 46:9 says, “I am God, and there is no one like me.” So it is very clear that there is one God who is the only God who alone created all and there is no other God like him. He is the sole creator. Nobody helped him in the creation.

Father from Genesis onwards:

Before the birth of Jesus God the Father was revealed to humanity. His name is Jehovah or Yahweh. We the Christians call Him, “God the Father.” We see him in Bible from Genesis onwards as the sole creator.

Three persons in Creation:

But, along with God the Father, we see two more persons in the work of creation. Even though it is mysterious, we see three persons in the creation. Let us read Genesis 1:1-3: “In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.” In original Hebrew text the words, “wind from God” can be translated, “the Spirit from God.” So a Spirit from God and his “word” were present there during the time of creation.

Jesus:

We all know that the word of God is Jesus. Let us read Revelation 19:13 that says about Jesus and his name: “He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is called The Word of God.2 Peter 3:5 says, “by the word of God heavens existed long ago and an earth was formed out of water…” Hebrews 1:2 says, “In these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds.John 1:3 says, “All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing come into being.” In Hebrews 1:10, God the Father says about the Son Jesus, “In the beginning, Lord, you founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.” So along with God the Father Jesus the second person took part in the creation.

Holy Spirit:

Proverbs 3:9 says, “The Lord by wisdom founded the earth.” So the God Almighty Jehovah founded the earth by His wisdom. Regarding wisdom, Solomon says in Wisdom of Solomon 7:22-23, “for wisdom, fashioner of all things, taught me. There is in her a spirit that is intelligent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, mobile, clear, unpolluted, distinct, invulnerable, loving the good, keen, irresistible, beneficent, humane, steadfast, sure, free from anxiety, all-powerful, overseeing all, and penetrating through all spirits that are intelligent, pure, and altogether subtle.” We know this all-powerful and holy and unique spirit is Holy Spirit. So the spirit in wisdom is Holy Spirit. That is why Wisdom of Solomon 1:6 says, “For wisdom is a kindly spirit.” Wisdom of Solomon 7:25 says about wisdom, “For she is a breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; … she is a reflection of eternal light, a spotless mirror of the working of God, and an image of his goodness. Although she is but one, she can do all things, and while remaining in herself, she renews all things.” We see here the Holy Spirit in wisdom can do all things even if he is remaining alone. The Holy Spirit in wisdom was with God the Father Jehovah during the time of creation. Let us read Proverbs 8:27 where the wisdom says about itself, “When he established the heavens, I was there;” and Proverbs 8:29-30 says, “when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always.”

The three persons:

Here we see three persons are involving in the creation. Even though Jehovah, God the Father created the whole creation, we see in the work of creation His son Jesus His word, and Holy Spirit. Even though we see the three persons through out bible, God the Father clearly revealed himself as a person through out the Old Testament and Jesus came in flesh as a man in New Testament. Holy Spirit as a person is revealed both in Old and New Testament. This Holy Spirit is not only a mere spirit of God the Father but he is an individual person as God the Father. We came to know that he can exist alone and work among us as a person.

Let us read John 14:16 where Jesus says to his disciples about Holy Spirit who is described as an Advocate: “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you for ever. This is the Spirit of Truth.” Let us read John 16:7-9 where Jesus says, “if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement.” In John 15:26 Jesus says, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father he will testify on my behalf.” Let us read John 16:13-14 where Jesus says, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you in to all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me.” The very same Advocate came down at the Pentecost Day upon the disciples in Acts 2:1-4. Here also we see that the Holy Spirit acts like a person.

No one like Him:

Jehovah the God the Father says in Isaiah 46:9, “I am God, and there is no one like me.” But Hebrews 1:3 says about Jesus, “He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. In Good News Bible it is said that “he is exact likeness of God’s own being” Even though Jesus is the exact imprint of God’s very being or exact likeness of God’s own being, God the Father says in Isaiah 46:9, “I am God, and there is no one like me.” Yes, Jesus is not another one like him but he is part and parcel of God the Father. Holy Spirit also is the breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty and an image of his goodness (Wisdom of Solomon 7:25). That is why, even though Jesus and Holy Spirit the two persons involved in the creation it is said in Isaiah 44:24 that says, “I am the Lord your saviour; I am the one who created you. I am the Lord, the creator of all things. I alone stretched out the heavens; when I made the earth, no one helped me.” Yes, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are not different from Yahweh. The God Almighty is three in persons who are Yahweh, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and they are spiritually intermingled and these three persons constitute one God who alone created the creation.

One God:

John 1:1-2 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” So Jesus is God and he is with God the Father. Suppose, I touch your hand; here I am touching you. When I touch your head, now also I am touching you. Even when I touch your shoulder, I am touching you only. Even though your head, hand and shoulder are different parts of your body, each part of your body is mentioned as you. Your head, hands and shoulders are with you. Both parts constitute a single man that is you. In spite of the different form of the individual parts, the identity and character of you is found in each cell of your whole parts of your body. Like that God’s Spirit and his Word are God and they are with God. All that are belonging to God are found in his Word and Spirit. About Jesus, Colossians 2:9 says, “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.” Your parts cannot act if they are separated and they may loose their life. But in God, his Word and his Spirit can exist individually with the fullness of deity in them and act separately. Yet the three persons can be single entity as they are spiritually intermingled. It is the capability of God as nothing is impossible for him.

Father and Jesus are one:

Let us read whole verse of Colossians 2:9: “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority.” We come to know here that Jesus is the head of every ruler and authority. If God the Father and Jesus are different persons then Jesus is to be the head of God the Father also, who is the ruler and authority of all. But both of them are one God who is the head of every ruler and authority.

That is why God the Father calls his Son Jesus, “God” in Hebrews 1:8 that reads, “But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever.” “ Here God the Father addresses Jesus, “O God.” But in Hebrews 1:9 the Psalmist David addressed Jesus as God and he called God the Father as the God of Jesus. Let us read the verse: “Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” Thus here we see God the Father calls the Son, “God” and at the same time God the Father is the God of Jesus. We know that there is no two God but only one God. So, both are the same and one God. In Isaiah 44:6 also God the Father says, “besides me there is no god.” Since there is no god beside him, he would not call Jesus, God. But he calls Jesus God. So Jesus is not another God beside him but he is God and the only God. So both God the Father and the Son Jesus is one God. Jesus says in John 10:30, “The Father and I are one.” John 16:15 says, “All that the Father has is mine.” John 14:11 says, “Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.”

God Jesus in Flesh:

The God Jesus born in flesh. The angel Gabriel says to Mother Mary about the birth of Jesus in Luke 1:35, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will over shadow you; there fore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called the Son of God.” Isaiah 9:6 says about Jesus, “For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Even though Jesus is the Son of God, he is Mighty God and Everlasting Father who came in flesh in this world.

Jesus is worshiped:

Since Jesus is Mighty God and Everlasting Father, God the Father asked the angels to worship Jesus. Hebrews 1:6 says, “When he brings the first born into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” “ In Revelation 5:8 we see twenty-four elders and four living creature fell before the lamb Jesus. Let us read the verse: “When he had taken the scroll, the four living creature and the twenty-four elders fell before the lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense.” We know the four living creature and the twenty-four elders are holding a very great position before the Lord. Let us read Revelation 5:11-14 also: “Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might for ever and ever!” And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshipped.” “ Because, we saw in Colossians 2:9 that says, “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.” Romans 9:5 says that from Israelites Messiah came in flesh but he is over all, God. Let us read the verses: “from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever.” 1 John 5:20 expressly says with authentication about Jesus, “He is the true God and eternal life”. John 5:23 says, “So that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.” The heavenly persons worship Jesus. Then what about we the human beings! Don’t we have the great duty to worship God Jesus? Jehovah Witnesses does not worship God Jesus. They do not honor the Son just as they honor the Father; they do not honor the Son and so they do not honor the Father who sent him. So we can understand who they are.

Denier of Jesus is Antichrist:

We see God Jesus came to us in flesh. Colossians 1:15-17 says, “He is the image of the invisible God the first born of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers all things have been created through him and for him.” But some people especially the sect of Jehovah witness refuses to accept Jesus as God when he came in flesh. Remember 2 John 1:7 that says, “Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh; any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.” Confess means acknowledge! We know Jesus Christ is God the Son. God came in flesh. But Jehovah witness does not acknowledge God Jesus Christ as God when he came in flesh. Anybody who does not confess that God Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is the deceiver and the antichrist. Let us read 1 John 4:2-3, “By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming; and now it is already in the world.” Now let us understand who is Jehovah witness and what kind of Spirit they have.

Jesus is inferior to God the Father?

Many raise a doubt whether Jesus is inferior to God the Father as Jesus says that God the Father is greater than him. Let us read John 14:28 where Jesus says about him: “the Father is greater than I.” In John 5:19-21, “Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished. Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.” “ We realize from the above verses that Jesus can do nothing on his own but he is taught by God the Father. And also John 6:27 says, “For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal.” Apparently it seems that Jesus is inferior to God the Father.

God the Father sends Jesus:

In John 8:42, “Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me.” So Jesus is the one who was sent. The sender is greater than the sent. The sender is God the Father and the sent is Jesus. Let us read John 7:16-18: “Then Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine but his who sent me. Anyone who resolves to do the will of God will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own. Those who speak on their own seek their own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and there is nothing false in him.” “ John 7:28-29 says, “Then Jesus cried out as he was teaching in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I am from. I have not come on my own. But the one who sent me is true, and you do not know him. I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.” “ Since Jesus is sent, there is a possibility of inference that the sender is greater than the sent.

Apparent inferiority:

We saw in 1 John 5:20 that Jesus is the true God and eternal life and in John 10:30, the Father and Jesus are one. In Isaiah 9:6 we saw Jesus, Mighty God and Everlasting Father. But in the previous two sub titles we get confused as to how God Jesus is seemingly inferior to God the Father. The answer is found in Philippians 2:5-8 that says, “Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross.” He was equal with God the Father and in the form of God. Even though, in order to save humanity, Jesus emptied himself and made himself humbled and became obedient to receive death on the cross. He did not regard to be kept equal with God but humbled himself to be taught and sent by God the Father. This is due to the love of Jesus for humanity. God the Father also loves the fallen humanity to give up his only begotten Son to be sacrificed on the cross.

Highly exalted Jesus:

Philippians 2:9-11 says, “Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” So every person in heaven and earth should bow before Jesus that is the glory of God the Father. We saw the angels and heavenly persons like elders and four creatures worshipping Jesus in Revelation 5:8 & 11-14. In this situation, be Beware of the sect, Jehovah Witness who prohibits worshiping Jesus as God Almighty. They are against the glory of God the Father.

The unique features of the Father:

There are unique features that are found only in God Almighty; only God alone but nobody can bear them. But the very same features are found in Jesus also as he is the God Almighty. Let us see them:

Genesis 17:1 “When Abraham was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abraham, and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless.” “ We know this is Yahweh - Lord God the Father. In Isaiah 44:6, “Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.” Isaiah 43:13 says, “I am God, and also henceforth I am He; there is no one who can deliver from my hand; I work and who can hinder it?” Isaiah 43:10 says, “you are my witnesses, says the Lord and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed nor shall there be any after me.”

Zechariah 14:5 says, “And you shall flee by the valley of the Lord’s mountain, for the valley between the mountains shall reach to A’Zal; and you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of King Uz.zi’ah of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.” Revelation 4:8 says about God the Father, “Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God the Almighty, who was and is and is to come.”

The unique features in Jesus:

Here above the God the Father is revealed as “God Almighty”, “Redeemer”, “the first and the last”, “I am He” and, “the Lord who was and is and is to come”. These very same unique features of God Almighty are seen in Jesus also who is the God Almighty. Let us read them:

In John 8:24 Jesus says, “I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he.” “I am he” is the special characteristic features of God that Jesus possess. Denying is sin and death. Now think of the pitiable condition of the sect, Jehovah witness who denies that Jesus is God. In John 13:19 also Jesus says, “I tell you this now, before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am he.”

Revelation 1:7-8 says about Jesus, “Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be Amen. “I am the Alpha and Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” In Revelation 21:6 Jesus says, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.” In Revelation 22:12-13 Jesus says, “See, I am coming soon, my reward is with me, to repay according to every one’s work. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” So there is no doubt that Jesus is God Almighty.

Honor Jesus as Father:

Let us remember once again John 5:23 that reads, “So that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.”

Father and Jesus is one Savior:

The God is the Redeemer of Israel. In Isaiah 43:3 God the Father says, “For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” Isaiah 44:6 says, “Thus says the Lord the King of Israel, and his Redeemer the Lord of hosts: I am the first and I am the last besides me there is no god.” God the Father says in Zechariah 10:8, “I will signal for them and gather them in, for I have redeemed them, and they shall be as numerous as they were before.” In Isaiah 43:11 God the Father says, “I, am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior.” But through out the bible we see Jesus is Saviour who is Messiah. Messiah means Redeemer. Let us read Luke 2:10-11: “But the angels said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see - I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people; to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah.” “ Jesus is Redeemer, Saviour, and Messiah. Since Jesus is one with God the Father, Father also says that he is the only redeemer and besides him there is no Saviour. Let us remember once again what Jesus said in John 10:30, “The Father and I are one.”

The Holy Trinity:

Romans 8:11 says, “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.” Here we see that the Holy Spirit of God the Father raised Jesus from the dead. Galatians 1:1 says, “Paul an apostle - sent neither by human commission nor from human authorities, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead.” Romans 10:9 says, “if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Here in Galatians 1:1 and Romans 10:9 we see that God the Father raised Jesus from the dead. Thus we come to know that The Holy Spirit of God the Father and Father are one.

The Holy Spirit of the Father and the Holy Spirit of Jesus also are one as the Father and Jesus are one. Romans 8:9 says, “you are in the Spirit since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.” Here Spirit of God the Father and Spirit of Christ are regarded as the same Spirit. Yes, The Father and Jesus are one and their Spirit is one who is inseparable from them as he is their Spirit and thereby the three person of Holy Trinity is one. They are spiritually intermingled and they are one single entity.

Conclusion:

Thus we see that God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are three persons but one God. That is why Jesus asked in Matthew 28:19 to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Amen!
